CHildren's Liturgy of the Word
What is the Children's Liturgy of the Word?
Children's Liturgy of the Word is offered on first Sunday of the month during the 10:30 am Mass from October through April. Children in Grades 1-5 are invited to go with their own Minister of the Word to hear the readings and the Gospel proclaimed at their own level and will enjoy Catholic coloring pages, lesson plans, Mass worksheets, crosswords, word search puzzles, and more.
They are then given the opportunity to discuss the readings and offer their own prayer intentions before returning to Mass in time for the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
Who provides the Liturgy and activities?
The Liturgy is provided by parish volunteers who are required to have a background check performed and to attend a training class provided by the Archdiocese of Portland.
Can I be a Liturgy of the Word volunteer?
Having extra volunteers for the Children's Liturgy of the Word program would be incredibly beneficial. Additional volunteers can provide more personalized attention to each child, ensuring that everyone feels included and understood. They can also help manage the group more effectively, allowing for smoother transitions and more engaging discussions. With more hands on deck, volunteers can bring diverse perspectives and creative ideas to the program, enriching the children's experience.
Furthermore, having a larger team can prevent burnout among volunteers, ensuring the program remains sustainable and vibrant throughout the year. Overall, extra volunteers enhance the quality and impact of this important ministry.
A background check, training are required and special requirements may apply. If you are interested in being a volunteer, please contact Joyce Sprouse.

The Children's Liturgy of the Word is a vital program for young Catholics, as it provides an age-appropriate way for children to engage with their faith. By offering the readings and Gospel at their level, children can better understand and connect with the teachings.
This program not only fosters a deeper spiritual connection but also encourages active participation in the Mass. Additionally, the opportunity to discuss the readings and share prayer intentions helps children develop a sense of community and belonging within the church. Overall, it nurtures their spiritual growth and lays a strong foundation for their lifelong faith journey.
